Ausone draws its name from the Roman poet Ausonius, who had a villa on the site, and according to Ficofi.com records of a vineyard there date back to at least 1592.
The estate was founded by the Chatonnet and Cantenants families, and for the past two centuries has been under the control of the Vauthier and Dubois-Challon families.
In 1997 current owners Alain Vauthier and his sister Catherine bought out their aunt Helyette Dubois-Challon, and since then Alain Vauthier has run the estate and has been responsible for the winemaking. Since 2005 he has been joined by his daughter Pauline.
