Château Mouton Rothschild
History and Ownership
Château Mouton Rothschild was bought by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, a member of the English branch of the banking family, in 1853, its name being changed from the previous Château Brane-Mouton following the purchase. In 1922 his great grandson Baron Philippe de Rothschild took over the estate, waging a half-century campaign to boost standards at the vineyard and winery and get the estate promoted from second to first growth status within the 1855 Bordeaux classification. He achieved his goal in 1973. His daughter Baroness Philippine took over the estate following his death in 1988, and she has been succeeded since 2014 by her elder son, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, who is now chairman of the supervisory board of Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA.
